Dr. Michael Ward is a Research/Publication Associate with the HEATH Resource Center for Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Disabilities at George Washington University. He served as Executive Director of the Arizona Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities from July 2000 until December 2003. Prior to this, he was the Director of the National Center for Self-Determination and 21 st Century Leadership at the Oregon Health Sciences University. Previously employed by the U.S. Department of Education for 18 years, Dr. Ward administered the Secondary Education and Transitional Services Branch and served as the chair of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services' workgroup for the self-determination initiative. He conceived a funding priority to teach skills necessary for self-determination to youth with disabilities and managed 26 model demonstration projects funded under this priority. Dr. Ward also worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for New York State Developmental Disabilities Services in Brooklyn, NY and an education specialist engaged in policy research for the Council for Exceptional Children. He received a Ph.D. in special education from the University of Maryland.
