Program prepares special ed students for life
Five Clay County businesses are finding value in helping special education students transition from high school to the workplace by being part of a Twin Lakes Educational Cooperative program called Project PROMISE. "Eighty percent of people in the workforce who lose their jobs lose it not because of lack of knowledge but because of an inability to work with others," Twin Lakes Educational Cooperative Director Marlise Tiffany said. The program, for students 18-21 with mild to moderate disabilities with Individual Education Programs (IEPs), is filling the gap between traditional high school and developmental services these students will receive when they turn 21

H-E-B begins stocking salad-dressing made by Texans with disabilities
H.E. Butt Grocery Co., otherwise known as H-E-B, has agreed to begin carrying a line of salad dressings produced by adults with special needs. H-E-B will sell five different salad dressings manufactured and bottled by the Brookwood Community, located just west of Houston in Brookshire, Texas. A chef at the nonprofit residential community developed the dressings. The residents, all adults with functional disabilities, will mass produce, bottle and label the dressings before shipping the products to H-E-B for distribution. San Antonio-based H-E-B will carry the dressings in 80 stores around Central and South Texas.
